E Ink electrophoretic displays are widely accepted today as the standard for high quality reflective black and white and most recently color displays for electronic books, electronic shelf labels, and many other applications. Advanced full color electrophoretic display platforms are now being commercialized that retain the same paper-like viewing characteristics of the previous successful electrophoretic platforms. These applications leverage E Ink’s key advantages of zero power image retention, high contrast in outdoor lighting and roll to roll processability and the flexibility and low power characteristics of these full color reflective color displays are enabling the demonstration and commercialization of dramatic new product concepts including color changing cars. The recent progress on flexible color electrophoretic display performance and new product integration will be reviewed, including key technical challenges that were overcome in the areas of design, testing and fabrication of color changing devices.
