Roll to roll vacuum coating is an established technology in the WEB processing industry. The applications are diverse. Highly productive applications by thermal evaporation are in example single barrier coatings or conductive layers for the packaging and capacitor film industry. Coating speeds can be as high as 18m/s. On the other side complex multi-layer stacks can be applied by R2R coating systems equipped with a well-defined set of e.g., magnetron sputtering sources. Coating speeds of such systems range within the scale of m/min. Low-emissivity layer stacks for energy control, anti-reflective, decorative coatings, or electronic applications like solar, electro chromatics or flexible circuit boards are examples of applications. Architectural-, transportation-, consumer goods- and beyond industries benefit from this wide range of applications and coating equipment technology. This presentation will review recent advances in the development of a new roll-to-roll (PVD) multi-layer coating system and platform. The machine manufacturer is requested to adapt individual customer needs and customize the coatings system on a project level. This includes the consideration of the economics and the use of a flexible platform to a multitude of innovative applications. Herein, we present the customizable modular FLC1600 R2R system that integrates two main coating chambers with dedicated further chambers for supporting processes. One of these chambers provide an anti-fingerprint coating process enhancing the versatility of such PVD coating systems. Modules can be arranged and configured to versatility in process or to enhance the productivity of the setup. This talk will illustrate the practicality of the system platform and its dedicated customization for high product versatility and productivity. The presentation will be concluded by results on the application of an anti-reflective layer stack.
